Life as an Engineer

monkey

I'm an engineer. Not the most glamourous of occupations, just ask comedians (one from Wales specifically) as when they ask you what you do for a living the joke is over when you tell them. I have voluntarily changed employer 3 times in the last 22 years but have worked for 11 companys - just shows you how messed up engineering has been in that time. Fortunately after my last employer made me redundant I was able to afford the camera kit I now use.

Macro Photography

As I live near the Royal Botanical Gardens in Edinburgh I have spent a lot of time wandering round the gardens with my macro lense. Macro photography shuts out the rest of the world which is great for de-stressing. Hopefully my skills are improving you be the judge after looking at my wildlife photographs Wildlife Gallery.

Sports Photography

Motorsport

Motorsport, and in particular motorbike racing, is my main photographic interest. Having family (thanks go to George, Yvonne and Ross) living on the Isle of Man means that the TT is my most frequented event. I have visited my local track East Fortune and Scarborough for what may become my favourite event, The International Gold Cup. Other tracks and events will hopefully be added to the calendar, keep visiting the site to see where else I visit. If you happen to be a rider at any of the events and want to see if i've got photographs of you racing, just drop me an e-mail and I'll check my database.

American Football

Thanks go to Doug Adamson, the GM of the Edinburgh Wolves American Football team, for providing me with the chance to shoot the Wolves home matches from the touchline. Not been the best finish to the Wolves season but it has been a great learning opportunity for me.

Cricket

Thanks to Andy Wilson and the rest of the guys at the Grange Cricket club I was able to stand on the boundary line at the Grange for most of the 2007 season. Inclement Scottish weather put the mockers on the teams league chances but when the sun was out I hope I did the team proud with the photographs I managed to take.

Ice Hockey

As a long term fan of the Ice Hockey team in Edinburgh, I had to make some effort to capture their games on camera. For the record the present team is the Edinburgh Capitals but their most famous name being the Murrayfield Racers. The rink isn't the best lit in the land making a fast lens essential. Even with an f/2.8 lens you still need to crank up the ISO to get half decent shots.

Rugby

With the Edinburgh Academicals on my doorstep it only seems fair I try to take photographs of their home matches down at Raeburn Place. Newly promoted to the Scottish First Division, the Accies will be amongst the toughest teams in the country (well apart from the two professional teams).

Baseball

Thanks to Nick Clark of the Edinburgh Eagles. Pity I didn't manage more than the one match, travelling and other commitments limited my visits. Maybe get some more matches in in 2008 (maybe at a ground closer to the centre of Edinburgh).
